Bridgeton is a city in Cumberland County, New Jersey on the Cohansey River near Delaware Bay. The city's population is around 27,000 and total area is 6.5 square miles. Bridgeton borders the Cumberland County municipalities of Fairfield, Hopewell, and Upper Deerfield townships, and is divided into Northside, Southside, and Hillside sections. Lenni-Lenape Native Americans originally inhabited the area, and the first European settlement was made in 1686. Bridgeton was incorporated in 1845 from portions of Deerfield Township, and was named for its location at a bridge on the Cohansey River.
